The best deterrent for drunk driving is incarceration for 3 months and then to take away your license for a year with probation just for the first offense. In Germany you lose your license for 3 months for running a red light, first offense. Say what you will but it is also one of the most laid back and otherwise liberal countries I have ever been in.

Arresting drunks in a bar is like taking a brown guy into custody just before he gets on a plane on the off chance that he MIGHT hijack it. Fucking TABC. I reckon this is how they are boosting the price of bribes.

True story -- This past Monday, March 20, 2006, I was walking north on the west side of Congress Ave to where my car was parked. Some police pulled over in front of me at the corner of 7th and Congress and got out and asked for ID. Someone had reported a fight breaking out at 4th and Congress and one of the men involved was 6' tall and wearing a black hat. After a few moments, they gathered that it had not been me but checked my TDL # anyway to, in the words of the officer, "Find out if you're wanted for murder." We were all very polite, and we parted on amicable terms. I hope they got their man.

Being a public nuisance is a crime almost anywhere that's in the public, but I have not heard precisely why the TABC has decided to go into bars. Maybe there's been more going on in Austin's bars than just public intoxication, or maybe it's practice.

Why the hell didn't they arrest the screeching women trying to booty dance to "Paradise City" at Rack Daddy's last night? If they're gonna outlaw bar drunks, start with the "first one drunk at the party" chicks. Everyone hates them. Except when it's me.
