Rocky Horror attack caught on CCTV

A VIOLENT electrician head-butted and punched a man dressed in drag in a homophobic attack in Cambridge.

Kelvin Stevens, 23, lashed out after hurling abuse at a group of raunchily-dressed revellers in Regent Street, who were on their way to cross-dressing stage show The Rocky Horror Picture Show at the Corn Exchange.

As he passed the group of men and women, dressed in the fishnet tights, suspenders and high heels traditionally worn by audience members at the popular musical, he called them "a load of fags" prompting a heated argument.

Then, as pushes were exchanged, Stevens launched a ferocious attack, head-butting and punching Barry Giles, 23, who was at a distinct disadvantage, tottering in stiletto heels with a green feather boa around his neck.

The fight sprawled into the street, with Stevens landing several punches on Mr Giles, who is from Hampshire, as the 23-year-old gamely attempted to fend him off and his female companions tried desperately to intervene.

And, in the true spirit of the saucy musical, the feather boa Mr Giles was wearing stayed firmly round his neck throughout the attack, which happened on Monday night.

The violent attack was caught, blow-by-blow, on CCTV monitoring the area, with images clearly illustrating the seriousness of the attack. Stevens, who works in Cambridge and lives in Basildon, Essex, was then tracked by cameras as he left the scene, and arrested a short while later in a city nightclub.

He admitted the attack when he appeared at Cambridge Magistrates' Court on Tuesday. Sentencing was adjourned until next month for probation reports.

Although the attack was not a direct homophobic assault as many members of the Rocky Horror Show audience dress in stockings and suspenders, a spokesman for Stonewall, the gay rights group, praised police for their quick work in arresting the culprit after he hurled anti-gay abuse.

A spokesman said: "It's encouraging that the police are taking this case seriously and are prepared to press charges."
