CANDLELIGHT VIGIL SET: TRANSGENDER DAY OF REMEMBRANCE
AUSTIN - On Thursday, November 20, at 6:30 p.m., a candlelight vigil
will be held at the University of Texas Main Mall, in front of the UT
Tower. The event is part of the internationally coordinated 5th Annual
Transgender Day of Remembrance to be held in at least 50 cities
worldwide. This is the second year that the vigil has been observed in
As of October 11, at least 16 transgendered individuals have been
murdered in the United States and Canada this year. The list includes
the killing of two women in Houston in June and July of this year.
Those crimes, like many against transgendered individuals, remain
"This event gives us an opportunity to remember those who have died
simply because they were perceived as 'different'," said Lisa Scheps,
one of the organizers of the vigil. "This is an opportunity for
individuals, both in and out of the gender community to come together
and say, 'This is wrong. Stop the killing.'"
The vigil is being sponsored by Transgender Advocates of Central
Texas, the Women's Resource Center, the Lesbian Gay Rights Lobby of
Texas, the Austin Latino/Latina Lesbian Gay Bisexual & Transgender
Organization, OutYouth, PFLAG, LBGSA, She Says, Alliance for a
Feminist Option, the Texas Gender Advocacy and Information Network,
the National Transgender Advocacy Coalition, Safe Place,
Transformations Psychotherapy Services, The Live Oak Council of
Covenant of the Goddess, Project Transitions, CTTGS and the Alpha Tau
Chapter of Tri-Ess.
