As you probably already know, California has been allowing same-sex marriages for about three months now. So the usual suspects have organized a drive for an amendment to the California state constitution that would ban same-sex marriage. The vote on the amendment happens to coincide with the presidential election on November 4th. The amendment is known as Proposition 8.
The first amusing development around this is the description of Proposition 8. As submitted, it was called the "California Marriage Protection Act". However the California Attorney General declined to use that language and instead labeled it simply "Eliminates Right of Same-sex Couples to Marry".
Cue the usual outcry from people who claim the language is inflammatory when it's called what it is instead of some sort of faux 'protection act'.
Next amusing development is how personally the Mormon church, next door in Utah, seems to be taking this. A web site at
http://mormonsfor8.com was set up specfically to track just how much involvement the LDS church has in promoting Proposition 8. About $16.6 million has been amassed for advertisements and such, and around 35% of the contributions have come in from various LDS organizations and individual Mormons. The Mormons are doing even more though:

They aren't just donating. They are fueling their GOTV [Get Out The Vote] activites. Mormons have been invading neighborhoods en mass. They are not using walk lists, but rather descend in large groups to knock doors and try and pass out the million yard signs they think is going to win them this election. It's flat out creepy. It freaks out entire communities and usually the No on 8 campaign hears within a few minutes where the Mormons have decided to invade on any given day.
Bizarre.
