Save The Original Alamo!

You know how Austin is being run into the ground by disgusting corporate douchebags? Yeah, they're trying to run the original Alamo off their turf so more overpriced bars can come in and serve fuckin' yuppies.

Anyhoo, I know everyone is just as poor as I am, but I just wanted to spread the word in case someone here had an extra $70-$2000 to donate to a non-profit.

Maybe we can put a collection from the cast together and donate in the name of Queerios, if only to show appreciation for them letting us crash at their other place. Just a thought.

'kay, see y'all on Friday.

But you can sing along to Hedwig and drink Live Oak Hefeweizen. Try that at TGIFuckface's.

At least I get paid today. I will see what I can do. Thanks for passing that along, Lindsay. I hadn't heard about that yet.

I was also thinking we could try to collect the $70 as a unit and donate in the name of the cast...

Ten years ago, my wife Karrie and I began our quest to open up the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema. Armed with the lessons we learned from our first failed theater venture in Bakersfield, California, we came to Austin with a projector, 200 seats, a paltry stash of money borrowed from a refinancing of Karrie's parents home, and what appeared to many of our family and friends to be a supremely risky plan. For 6 months, we worked non-stop and with some help from friends, personally built from scratch every detail of what is now known as the Alamo Drafthouse Downtown at 409 Colorado.

Ten years later, we stand before a new challenge. We are in the final year of a ten year lease, and must decide on whether or not there is a future for the original Alamo. In order to renew the lease, we must face economic reality. To conform to downtown market rates, our rent will double; property taxes and insurance have tripled, and these increases show no signs of slowing down.

Faced with similar challenges, many downtown businesses (Gilligan's, Waterloo Brewing Company, Miguel's La Bodega to name a few) have decided to call it quits. We, however, despite overwhelming odds, have decided to draw a line in the sand and continue the fight. With your help, we will not be closing our doors.

As of June 1, we have formed a new non-profit corporation, Heroes of the Alamo Foundation, for the purposes of supporting cutting-edge film in downtown Austin and acquiring and continuing the operations of the Alamo Drafthouse Downtown. We provide arts and cultural education and entertainment to the city of Austin that is not being provided by anyone else. If you appreciate the programming that the Alamo Drafthouse Downtown provides, we ask that you become an official patron of the theater. We have a range of member and donor packages both for individuals and corporations. Your contribution will help the Alamo Drafthouse Downtown continue to exist and provide the vast array of programming responsible for Entertainment Weekly naming us "The best theater in America doing it right."

The Alamo Drafthouse Downtown helps define what Austin, Texas is today, and to let it close would be to let a part of Austin die. I am unwilling to let that happen. I hope that you will help me in this challenge.
