As you probably already know, California has been allowing same-sex marriages for about three months now. So the usual suspects have organized a drive for an amendment to the California state constitution that would ban same-sex marriage. The vote on the amendment happens to coincide with the presidential election on November 4th. The amendment is known as Proposition 8.

The first amusing development around this is the description of Proposition 8. As submitted, it was called the "California Marriage Protection Act". However the California Attorney General declined to use that language and instead labeled it simply "Eliminates Right of Same-sex Couples to Marry". Cue the usual outcry from people who claim the language is inflammatory when it's called what it is instead of some sort of faux 'protection act'.

Next amusing development is how personally the Mormon church, next door in Utah, seems to be taking this. A web site at http://mormonsfor8.com was set up specfically to track just how much involvement the LDS church has in promoting Proposition 8. About $16.6 million has been amassed for advertisements and such, and around 35% of the contributions have come in from various LDS organizations and individual Mormons. The Mormons are doing even more though:

Quote:
They aren't just donating. They are fueling their GOTV [Get Out The Vote] activites. Mormons have been invading neighborhoods en mass. They are not using walk lists, but rather descend in large groups to knock doors and try and pass out the million yard signs they think is going to win them this election. It's flat out creepy. It freaks out entire communities and usually the No on 8 campaign hears within a few minutes where the Mormons have decided to invade on any given day.

Bizarre.

Nothing to do with the Mormons this time, but still freaking amusing:

http://www.sacbee.com/749/story/1239425.html

Quote:
In May, after the California State Supreme Court ruled same-sex marriage legal, the courts mandated state officials to provide gender-neutral licenses and other marriage forms. "Bride" and "groom" became "Party A" and "Party B."

Quote:
"We just feel that our rights have been violated," she said.
...
"Those who support (same-sex marriage) say it has no impact on heterosexuals," said Brad Dacus of the Pacific Justice Institute. "This debunks that argument."

I'd love for these two people to have a chat with someone whose civil rights actually have been violated, rather than just being asked to write their name next to 'Party A' or 'Party B' on a wedding license.

So with 95% of precincts reporting, it looks like Prop 8 passed with 52.0% of the vote. I have a feeling this might actually help to work things out sooner overall, since this issue was always going to end up being decided (eventually) by the Supreme Court. The judicial branch is where minority protections typically come from, as it's relatively easy to convince the majority to vote against them. Allowing people to marry for a few months and then suddenly pronouncing those marriages null and void will initiate a whole new wave of lawsuits. As I've seen at least one person complain, the reason why so many corporations offer benefits now for same-sex partners is because gay people have such good lawyers.

P.S. One other interesting tidbit that came out in the past few days, based on an internal memo that was leaked. Apparently the LDS church has been planning their opposition to gay marriage in both Hawaii and California since at least 1997. They decided early on that they didn't have a good enough public reputation to mount this opposition on their own, so they decided they needed to tie in to the Catholic church and other groups to be the public face of opposition while the LDS church provided money for it. This was all planned ELEVEN YEARS ago. Scary.
